Hassan v. City of New York is a federal lawsuit filed against the City of New York that challenges the New York Police Department’s suspicions surveillance of Muslim Americans in New Jersey solely because of their Muslim identity.
Summary

As documented by the Associated Press, the NYPD has been conducting unlawful surveillance of innocent American Muslims simply because of their faith. American Muslims were targeted in New York City, as well as in towns, mosques, businesses, and college campuses throughout the northeast, including New Jersey. Records show that the NYPD took copious notes on the details of American Muslims’ daily lives.
The plaintiffs in the lawsuit are as diverse as the American Muslim community itself: they include a decorated U.S. Army reservist, a small business owner who is also a Vietnam veteran, students and imams.
Question: Do you believe the NYPD has the authority/right to spy on American Muslims just because of there race?
No it is not justified to spy on people because of their nationality or religous beliefs. #YoungMoney
ReplyDeleteJust because there Muslim gives the US no right to spy in there personal information. There race doesn't define how someone will act and its not fair to assume either.

ReplyDeleteThe NYPD does not have the right to spy on American Muslims just because of they are Muslim. The plaintiffs have the right to privacy, and they shouldn't be taking notes of their daily lives. They should only spy if they have reasonable suspicion.
ReplyDeleteno, they shoudl not be in other peoples business, they need to mind their own. They should no be worried about anybody else but themselves. Leave the muslims alone
ReplyDeleteI believe that the NYPD has every right to take surveillance of suspected criminals of all races. But not just targeting innocent Muslims whom have nothing to hide and are a part of this country and are thus protected by the Bill of Rights.
ReplyDeleteI feel they should not be targeted because of their race. Just because someone is of the same race as a previous criminal than everyone would have to be monitored because everyone type of person has a committed a crime. If that is irrational then why would this not be.
ReplyDeleteNot at all, that is discrimination and the government or anyone has no right to accuse anybody of a crime just by race without any factual evidence or cause. Its an invasion of privacy and is unconstitutional.
ReplyDeleteNo, I do not believe that the NYPD has the right to spy on American Muslims just because of there race. The should not be allow to spy on only one race, if it was every other race, it would be fine.

ReplyDeleteNo, I do not think the NYPD has the right to spy on people based on their race. Assuming everyone from a country is guilty is discrimination. But I do think it's okay to spy on certain individuals who seem suspicious.

ReplyDeleteThey do not have the right because racial and religious profiling is not something that should be allowed. You cannot arrest search someone because of their skin color, and you think because of that they might be doing something illegal, and you cannot spy on people because of their religious beliefs.
ReplyDeleteThe NYPD does not have the right to spy on any specific race at all. This is just pure racism. It is ok to spy on specific individuals who have been accused of doing something wrong but not a whole race. This is an invasion of privacy also because there is no real reason to spy on them.
ReplyDeleteThe NYPD should not have the right to spy on an individual due to his or her race. However, the NYPD should be able to spy on people who have reasonable suspicion to be criminals. This means that the NYPD should be able to spy on Muslim Americans if the NYPD could provide reasonable suspicion that these individuals were partaking in illegal activities. In the end, it is not constitutional to spy on an individual solely because of their ethnicity.
