Summary:
Former
African American high school basketball coach for Johnson High School,
Maurice Ford, led his team to a state championship game this year. He
was later fired without reasoning, and a new, caucasian coach was hired
shortly after. The school claims that the new coach, Mr. Doss, had an
amazing coaching background and that the move was in the best interest
of the student athletes, but were unable to come up with any reasonable
actions leading to Ford's replacement. Ford later took a stand and sued
the school for racial discrimination. Ford filed a charge of
discrimination with the equal employment opportunity commission in 2013
and Ford received his right to sue that September. The jury ruled
that he was protected under the civil rights act of 1994 leading him to
win the case.
Do you think it was right for Ford to have won the case?
Do you believe that there was racial discrimination involved in the firing of Ford?

I believe that Ford only sued the the school for racial discrimination because he was fired without reason. However, I don't think Ford should have jumped to the conclusion that his being fired was due to racial discrimination. Mr. Doss could have had an even better background or experience in the sport, and this could be why they fired Ford. Without reasoning, there is now way to tell if racial discrimination was the basis of the school's actions.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe Ford had the right to win the case because he does not have enough evidence to prove that his firing was due to his race. I do not believe that the school would have any motives to fire a successful coach due to race, and there must have been some other reasons. Also, the fact that he was hired in the first place indicates that the school would most likely not have any prejudice or problems with his skin color.
ReplyDeleteYes it was right for ford to have won the case it's unfair that he got fired right after taking his team to the state championship and winning it all. Racial discrimination was imminent in this case it had an effect on the decision of firing mr.ford
ReplyDeleteI believe there was racial discrimination involved in the firing of the coach without reason. I believe it was right that he won the case due to the no reasoning.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if he should have won the case or not. I think that the case really depends on the reason that he was fired in the first place, and if there was a reason for them to fire him for his race, or if there was another reason why he was fired. Nobody really knows any details of the firing, or it's not detailed in the article, and the article makes it sounds like he was just randomly fired without reason, which I doubt happen. My guess is that if he wouldn't disclose the reason for his termination, then there is probably a reason he was fired and wanted to call it racism because his successor was caucasian. But again, there aren't really enough details about anything, so it's hard for me to decide.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that it was right for him to win the case since he doesn't have any evidence stating that it was racial discrimination, that is what he assume. What triggered him to think that is that the school gave him no reasoning to why he was fired, even though he was a good coach, Mr. Doss might have been better than him.
ReplyDeleteJohnson High School Coach Maurice Ford has filed his lawsuit and the case is still under consideration. If he has been terminated based only on his race, while replaced by a white coach, then racial discrimination occurred. Although it seems unfair that Ford heard about his termination in media reports, and was not allowed to reapply or interview for his job, all of the factors behind the school district’s decision are not yet known since the case is still pending. It seems likely there are more facts behind this decision, given that “Ford had lead Johnson to the Class 4A state championship just three months earlier.” Since the Huntsville School District insists that, “all decisions concerning this matter were properly made,” it is good that Ford has filed his lawsuit to have his day in court. During the trial, all facts of the matter will become known.
ReplyDeleteI believe it was right for him to have won the case. He seemed to be a good coach since he was able to lead the team to the state championship game this year. If there was no real evidence as to why he was fired then there was racial discrimination involved in the firing of Ford.
