Congress Against the World

Summary - After 54 years of isolation the embargo placed on Cuba from the U.S might possibly be lifted. The UN vote for the lift in the embargo could be in a month, following four administration officials who weren't allowed to speak on the matter hinted at the unprecedented abstention of the U.S for the vote. Obama has had his mind set on the embargo lift since last December and been acting on it for the last few months, announcing that Washington and Havana would normalize diplomatic relations, re-opening both countries embassies, and chipping away at U.S restrictions on trade and travel to Cuba. Obama and Castro have been meeting recently talking about the cooperation individually and together they could be take to end the blockade policy for the benefit of both peoples, and though they have not mentioned the UN vote, Cuba will introduce a resolution, as it has for the last 23 years, at the upcoming General Assembly criticizing the embargo and demanding it's end. The U.S has lost each vote by increasing margins with only Israel's support in last year's vote. U.S has not decided how to vote but according to officials the U.S is more likely to vote against the issue rather than abstain. It will mostly rely on what's in the resolution, the resolution will not be pre-judged before it's final.
Question(s) - President Obama has complete disapproval from Senate, what do you think
we should do? What are the repercussions if we go through with lifting the embargo?

  1. What happens in the next presidential election if a candidate comes out openly for lifting the embargo?

  2. Despite having complete disapproval from the Senate, President Obama should abstain from the UN vote condemning the Cuban embargo. In a 2014 article in the Huffington Post, a poll by the Atlantic Council showed "more than half of Americans want to put the U.S. embargo to rest." The policy should end because it "failed over more than five decades to spur democratic change and left the U.S. isolated among its Latin American neighbors," says President Obama in the article above. It is time for the U.S. to allow communication, trade, and tourism, with a country that is no longer a threat to security.

  3. In his own words "Obama says the policy failed over more than five decades to spur democratic change and left the U.S. isolated among its Latin American neighbors." So yes, lift the embargo and needed to end a long time ago.

  4. Lift the embargo because Cuba is willing to cooperate with president Obama. It says "Obama and Castro have been meeting recently talking about the cooperation individually and together they could be take to end the blockade policy for the benefit of both peoples". If we lift the embargo it could help us out and it will be beneficial to us in the future maybe.

  5. Even though the senate disapproves the embargo lift, I strongly believe that the U.S. should lift the blockade. The lift is long overdue because it has been "54 years of isolation." One benefit is being able to trade with Cuba. A repercussion could be having more illegal immigrants coming in to the U.S.

  6. There are pros and cons to lifting the embargo on Cuba. I believe the embargo shouldn't be lifted until Castro agrees to release political prisoners and we start to see a government that benefits the people, rather than mistreats them. Basic human rights need to be given to the people of Cuba. I think Obama should continue to negotiate with Castro to persuade him to change his ways(even though it almost seems like a lost cause). However, the embargo also seems counterproductive and hasn't really gotten Cuba to change its ways. Lifting it might actually open up chances for outside influence that could possible change things in Cuba for the better.

  7. I believe that we should try to demonstrate to the UN first, of how it can benefit both the United States and Cuba. If we can sway the minds of the other nations then we will be able to sway the Senate in response. Since the Senate is more Republican, I feel that they have more nationalism, which makes them fear when talking about raising the embargo. If we lift it we can see pros and cons. One pro is increase in the trade system and a con is that maybe there can be people trying to harm us, from past encounters.

  8. acknowledging the fact that the blockade has been applied for over 54 years is surprising. I believe they should lift the blockade, and its wrong for senate to deny the embargo lift specially because Cuba is offering cooperation by trading with the US.

  9. It seems like Obama and Cuba have been cooperating with each other. It is a good idea to lift the embargo because this would enable us to trade with Cuba and have other connections that we never had in the past. Cuba is not doing anything wrong and they are willing to trade with us, this is why it is not right for the U.S not to lift the embargo. While this has many positives, this may in turn, allow easier access for immigrants to flee into the united states.

  10. The United States should lift the embargo on Cuba because the embargo hurts the people of Cuba, not the government, as intended. Cuban people do not have access to technology, medicine, affordable food, and other goods that could be available to them if the United States lifted the embargo. I do not believe Cuba poses a military threat to the U.S. at this time and no longer poses as a threat to capitalism.

  11. Cuba Yes was a good country at one time. However the people in cuba still want to get back at the United States if we release this so called embargo there is a clear shot of something happening in the US involving cuba. Cuba is like Russia it is close to communist as you can get the goverment controls what you say do print on paper how long you can work where you can work and so forth. There is no $ at this time to be made with cuba.

  12. The embargo on cuba donesn't help us at all, just makes another country dislike us, if we were to allow embargo's to the US it could only help what is going on. Also that world war 2 is over GIVE IT UP

  14. Lifting the embargo on cuba is right because it is pointless to still be mad about something that we were disputing about many years ago that doesn't have any relevancy to today.

  15. By lifting the embargo we run the risk of several other countries disagreeing with the decision and disliking us. We should not lift it because it does not benefit us in anyway, if it does not help us why should we do it. Even though not lifting it is affecting the cubans that should not affect the decision. The cuban civilization is not something we need to worry about.

  17. I don't see any good reason to cut of a country just because of what Government they run. Even though the United States doesn't agree with help Russia during the cold war, but they have no control of what they did there a small country compared to Russia.

  19. The United States should lift the embargo with Cuba the United States government shouldn't be stuck in the past and focus it's objectives on the present future look at the benefits of lifting the embargo trade with Cuba, having the Cuban nation as an Allie. It would certainly benefit the government to lift the embargo.
